Hiring a Graphic Designer can be daunting. How do you choose between all those people? Do you want a freelance designer or a design firm? Let me give you some information on how to make the best decision...
There are two basic categories of designers you should keep in mind
when deciding on your designer:
Design Firms & Freelance Designers.
Depending on what project you are doing depends on which one is right for you.
Design Firms / Agency
-Usually more expensive.
-Group of collaborating designers. (Could have more variety of skills than just one designer)
-Have a set payment protocol they follow.
-They can handle big jobs better than a Freelance Designer

Freelance Designer
-Generally less expensive than an agency
-Only one person will be working on your project, not a team.

What to look for in any designer:
-Extensive portfolio
-Pricing per project ($30 - $90hr is normal)
-Experience that relates to your project
-How fast they respond & how they follow through with promises.
-Recommendations / References
-Local or out of town (depends on your preference)
-What is included in my project, source files? (Do you have to pay extra for those?)
Things to watch out for:

Things to watch out for:
• If they say they can do it all, they might not specialize in one specific thing. That might be fine with you, but if you are looking for a specific thing done, you need an experienced designer in the field.
• Make sure you talk about the rights to your work before you begin working. There might be a charge for handing over copyright rights. That's normal. Make sure you own the rights to your project if you will be using it for business purposes. (read more about copyright laws HERE)

Something to keep in mind:
All designers are different and they all have different skill sets, if your looking for a logo designed, even the best catalog layout designer cannot complete your request...
Have fun choosing a designer!
